MICHAEL BAUCUM was born in Charleston, Mississippi and grew up in San Antonio. He is married to Laura Bertetti Baucum also an attorney. They have two daughters, Emily who recently graduated from Northwestern University and is now an award winning on air reporter at News 6 (CBS Affilliate) in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Laurie, a May 2010 graduate of St. Mary’s School of Law, who has now joined Baucum Steed Barker and also practices in real estate. After his graduation from Southwest Texas State University in 1968, Michael entered St. Mary's University School of Law. He earned a J.D. degree in 1971, and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas that same year. Michael began his legal career in a general practice with two older lawyers, gaining valuable experiences from these seasoned veterans. In 1984 Michael entered into partnership with Jerry T. Steed, the World’s best partner. Baucum Steed Barker concentrates in the area of real estate law including oil and gas.

In addition to authoring the articles above, Michael continues to serve on the faculty of the State Bar of Texas Practice Skills Seminar and Boot Camp in real estate. He has been involved with the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism, and is a frequent speaker at local and state bar legal seminars and other legal seminars. Michael is active in the Texas Land Title Association where he serves on the Special Claims Counsel Committee. He has served on the member of the Planning Committee for the Texas Land Title Institute, a seminar presented annually by the Texas Land Title Association and St. Mary's University School of Law. He spoke at that seminar in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 2006. He was on the planning committee for the State Bar of Texas Advanced Real Estate Drafting Course for 2000, 2001,and 2002. He spoke at that seminar in 1998, 1999, and 2000. He has spoken on a wide variety of subjects to the San Antonio Real Estate Discussion Group. He was the founder of and moderator for the Discussion Group’s on-line discussion area. He was the Course Director for the State Bar of Texas Advanced Real Estate Seminar in July, 2004. His proudest achievement is the many years devoted mentoring young lawyers and the Real Estate Skills Seminars and Real Estate Boot Camps for the State Bar of Texas on which he has worked since 1989. He has received numerous awards from the State Bar of Texas for his work in continuing education to the bar. He is also deeply involved in mentoring law students who are interested in the area of real estate.
Michael is certified as a specialist in Commercial and Residential Real Estate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas Real Estate, Probate, and Trust Section, and was recognized as a Super Lawyer by his peers in Texas Monthly Magazine in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and again in 2011.
His hobbies including reading fiction, his daily walk with Best Dog Buddy, and Bikram Yoga.
